How to Choose the Right Moving Company: Five Tips

Moving is a challenging event but to make this event go smoother there are certain steps that will help.

First, be sure that the mover you choose is licensed, insured and registered. When a mover has all three of these requirements, they are more apt to meet with your needs and have the expertise you need to get the job done. Second, check with friends and relatives on any experiences that might have had with the movers you have chosen. If you cannot find any references to movers from friends or relatives, you can always check with the Better Business Bureau.

Third, make sure that the mover you choose has a place of business. There are some moving companies that do not give out a business address online, or are reluctant to give you an address. It helps greatly if you can visit the company's office location before making your decision. Many have found it very helpful checking out a moving company's address. You can see what their company looks like and how they're operating by making an unexpected visit.

Four, some also suggest that you don't listen to a person in sales who is telling stories about other movers. Also, if you are moving to a different state you need the following documents, an "order for service," a written estimate for your total moving costs, and a table of measurements of all items being moved. In addition, on the day of the move begin by introducing yourself to the movers and vice versa. This is important because the movers will be in your home and they will need to know where everything is located. And, any particular instructions should be seen clearly, such as items not being moved by them-by putting them in a certain location with a large sign saying-These Items Stay."

Five, be sure to check out the mover's policies on gratitudes--especially meals. You can find this out by asking the sales representataive about what the movers will expect. They often accept beverages and cold water and appreciate a place where they can wash up and use the bathroom. Let the movers know where they can get these amenities before the moving process begins. And, should you have any problems with the movers or the process, talk with the driver because he is the one who is usually in charge. Expect professional courtesy and if you don't, report this to company headquarters after the moving process is over or if there is an issue that needs to be addressed, report it earlier.

Every move is important and stress is hard to avoid but to make the moving process go smoother, be prepared, have important phone numbers and addresses ready and begin packing early.
